The dutch oven is the most versatile of cast iron pots, and quite possibly the only pot you will ever need.
It can be used on a gas ring, an altar fire, or can be buried in coals. It is suitable for boiling, broiling, roasting, baking, stewing, frying and any other method of cooking. This is, by far, the best piece of camp cooking equipment available.
Our dutch ovens are pre-seasoned, however, we would recommend you season them again.
Available in both 4.25ltr at £31.50 and 8ltr at £42.50
History of the Dutch Oven
The Dutch oven became popular in the 1600's and were produced and imported to Great Britain by Dutch merchants. The Dutch had created a process for making smooth Dutch ovens because they had introduced sand to the molds in which they poured the brass material the pots were originally made from. With their smooth interior and exterior, and their durability, they were very much the hit among the English.
In the 18th century, an Englishman by the name of Abraham Darby traveled to the Netherlands to explore the Dutch process of creating the pots. Filled with new insight he returned to the UK and began to tinker with creating a more efficient, baked mold. The new molding system took off and Darby began to sell the pots in mass throughout the UK and into the American colonies. In the American colonies, the pots soon became a staple of life and were referenced by Lewis and Clark in their Westward exploration, George Washington's mother, who left the pot as an item in her will, and Paul Revere who was credited with reshaping the lid to allow for coals to be placed on top of it.
Now, some four hundred years later, the Dutch ovens are still in fashion for a variety of reasons:
