Tents are in essence a shelter from the outdoor extremities. They are made by draping materials over or attaching them to poles or supporting frames or ropes. Some larger tents are held down by using guy ropes which are kept in place by pegs or stakes in the ground. Nomads are people who live from place to place and have no set place to live and were the first kinds of people to use tents. Now it is commonplace for them to be used for recreation whilst out on a camping trip or used for shelters when the structure has no need to be permanent.

Small tents or large tents?

In modern society tents can range from a “wigwam” structure for the backpacker or traveller right through to colossal tents housing thousands of people. Tents used by people who backpack are the easiest to carry around as they are light and also inexpensive. Small tents can be carried around in a backpack and can be put up in seconds. As mentioned tents were and still are inhabited by nomads and camping folk alike. They are also used for victims in disaster stricken areas, shelters for industrial purposes and corporate event tents on major scale. The US army are the biggest users of mess tents above anyone in the world. They have guidelines for the quality of army tents used set out with specific guidelines.

The camping community are big users of tents especially canvas tents. Their tenting requirements are such that they need something that is lightweight durable and doesn’t impact on the environment. In emergencies canvas tents are used generally as they allow people to breathe whilst being a non-permanent sheltered area.
